I finally switched to 50% upfront after a 6 week ghost act

A Denver startup owed me $4,200 for a finished website and just vanished after three friendly invoices. I tried the deposit route on my next two projects and both paid the first half without blinking, has anyone else seen that kill the slow payment problem?

6 week ghost act" is honestly the nicest way anyone has ever described getting stiffed. I tried the 50% upfront thing and yeah, it works, but now I'm just over here wondering how many other freelancers are accidentally running a donation service before they figure it out. Maybe I should start asking for 100% and see if anyone blinks first, you know? The ones who pay half upfront are probably the same ones who'll actually pay the rest, which says a lot about the other 50% of humanity. Or maybe I'm just bitter, but hey, at least the ghosts are cheaper to deal with now.
