Serious question, has anyone tried the late fee trick and actually gotten paid?
Had a landscaper client stiff me on a $2,300 invoice back in March, and I sat on it for six weeks doing the usual polite follow up emails that went nowhere. What finally worked was sending a new invoice with a 5 percent late fee added on and a line that said "net 15 from today, or this goes to collections on the 16th." Got a check three days later, no apology, no explanation, just the money. The weird part is I almost didn't send it because I figured it would torch the relationship, but the guy hired me again in May for a bigger job. Now I put that late fee language in my original contract, which I should have done from day one, and I mention it out loud before I start. Curious if anyone else has had this blow up in their face, or if adding the fee upfront scares off good customers.
