Tried that deposit-before-start rule, got a weird pushback from a repeat gig in Portland

I asked for 50% upfront on a $800 logo job after getting burned twice this spring, and the client said sure but then ghosted me for 3 weeks before paying in full, no explanation. Lesson learned: taking the money upfront doesn't stop the silent treatment, so now I ask for a kickoff call the same day I send the invoice, anyone else run into that?
