TIL you can give someone a reaction to a patch test 3 days later, and I learned it the hard way at my old salon in Reno
A client came in for a brow tint and I did the patch test like always, 24 hours ahead, no redness, totally fine. She called me 3 days after her appointment with a swollen, itchy brow line and I felt awful because I assumed once you pass the 24 hour mark you're in the clear. Turns out a delayed reaction to PPD can show up anywhere from 48 to 72 hours out, and my old boss said she'd seen it happen twice in her 15 years behind the table. I now write the patch test date on their card and tell everyone to call me if anything shows up within the week, even if the service went fine. Cost me a refund and a very awkward phone call, but I still do patch tests the same way, just with way more info up front. Does anyone else out there tell clients about the delayed window, or am I the only one who didn't know this for way too long?
Been doing brows for 6 years and had almost the exact same thing happen. Client passed her 24 hour test fine, got her tint, then showed up 4 days later with a red puffy line and I was mortified. What saved me was switching to a paper log where I write the patch date, the product, and the batch number, then I set a phone reminder for day 4 to shoot them a quick text asking how their skin is doing. Takes 30 seconds and I've caught two reactions early since then, both times before the client even noticed anything was off. I also stopped saying the test is "passed" out loud because that word makes people think it's a guarantee. Now I say the test only covers the first day or two and anything after that needs to be told to me. That one line changed how clients talk to me about it, they actually call now instead of waiting and hoping it goes away.
