Bought a $75 hoof nipper from a catalog and it lasted 3 horses before the edge rolled over
Back when I started out, an old farrier in my town told me to only ever buy nippers I could hold and squeeze first. I ignored that when I was young and broke, because a catalog showed a pair on sale for $75 and I figured I was saving money. That pair made it through 3 horses before the cutting edge rolled over and it started crushing the hoof wall instead of cutting it clean. I ended up borrowing a rasp to fix the mess I made on a horse out in the county, and that was embarrassing enough that I never went cheap on nippers again. The real kicker is I paid almost the same as a good used pair would have cost me at the time. What's the one tool you learned the hard way not to skimp on?
