Had a talk with an old timer that changed how I shoe draft horses

Ran into Bob from Montana at a clinic in Billings last Saturday. He told me I was overthinking my shoeing on heavy draft horses, that they need more weight and less manipulation. Said he's been doing it for 40 years with just a standard keg shoe and a hot fit. Made me think about all the time I waste shaping for no reason. Anyone else ever get a tip from someone older that made you simplify your whole approach?

Man, that Bob sounds like he knows his stuff. I read a piece in an old farrier quarterly that said the same thing about draft horses. They talked about how a lot of modern shoeing tries to fix problems that don't exist with those big guys. Their feet are already built to handle weight and impact, so trying to get too fancy with the shape just creates more work and can mess up their natural movement. Bigger, heavier shoes with less messing around seems to be the real secret.

Funny how the old guys usually have it figured out. They spent decades watching what actually works and what's just extra steps. Makes you wonder how much time we waste on stuff that doesn't matter.

Doesnt experience sometimes just mean doing the same wrong thing longer?
