Old timer told me to rasp the heels first on a tricky hoof
This 70 year old farrier at a clinic in Lexington said I was wasting time doing the toe first on a club foot. Tried his way on a nasty foundered pony last week and the shoe sat way flatter. Anyone else had luck flipping the order like that?

Yeah that "waste of time" line is exactly what I heard from a guy at a horse expo in Ohio last fall. He said old school farriers used to rasp the heel first on anything with a steep angle cause it lets the shoe sit more natural without fighting the hoof wall. I tried it on a foundered mare I've been battling and the shoe didnt want to slide forward like it always does when I start at the toe. Made the whole process faster too cause I wasnt chasing the angle the whole time. Makes sense when you think about it, the heel is where the breakover really starts.

That "waste of time" line sounds like something my grandpa would say before showing me a shortcut that actually works. Guess the old timers knew a thing or two about not fighting the hoof.
