The 'just trim the fronts' advice from an old-timer I ignored

A guy at the state fair told me to back those fronts on a big Thoroughbred with thin walls, said I'd regret skipping it. Three weeks later that horse had a quarter crack that needed patches for six more, cost the owner $300 extra. You still backing fronts on thin-walled horses or do you leave them?
