The way I used to shape shoes on the anvil was all wrong until 3 years ago

For years I would just hammer the toe and heel cold and call it a day. Then I took a clinic in Lexington and the old timer there showed me how to work the steel hot all the way through. Now I heat every shoe to a cherry red before I start shaping, especially on drafts and warmbloods with big feet. It cut my fitting time in half, down to about 12 minutes per shoe. I used to fight the steel and end up with uneven heels that took forever to level. Now the metal moves smooth and I get a way better fit on the foot. Has anyone else changed how they forge shoes and seen a big difference in how the horse moves?

My old boss used to say you could feel the difference in the horse's stride ten minutes after you put the shoe on. @averyc94 is right about spelling, but that clinic in Lexington really flipped a switch for me too, now I won't touch a cold shoe even for a quick reset on a pony.

Damn, do you preform the heels hot too or just the toe and quarter?

Pretty sure it's "perform" not "preform" but yeah, hot for the whole shoe.
