Tried that new forge welding technique I saw on a UK forum last week
Decided to try a 'scarf and tap' method instead of my usual upsetting approach for a steel repair on a draft horse shoe. The metal just crumbled on me after two strikes, totally ruined the shoe. Has anyone else messed up a job trying something from an overseas farrier group?

That "scarf and tap" method works fine if your steel isn't already garbage, maybe check your metal quality first.

Did you check the carbon content on that steel before you started? UK forums sometimes run different alloys than what we get stateside and it matters a lot for forge welding.

yeah i actually watched a video from that uk blacksmithing channel last week and they were saying the exact same thing about the alloys being different over there, it changes the whole welding temp window. @jessica331 i think youre kinda right about the scarf and tap thing but honestly if your metal quality is questionable the carbon content is the first thing id check anyway, especially if youre trying to match what UK guys are doing. makes a huge difference in how the billet stacks.
