Blew out the side seam on a linen shirt reaching for a book at Half Price Books last Sunday

I was at Half Price Books in Dallas bending down to grab a book off the bottom shelf and heard a loud rip. The side seam under my arm gave out completely, busted open about four inches. I had to walk to the register holding my arm against my body so nobody could see my undershirt. That's when I realized linen with tight woven seams isn't great for active movement. Has anyone else had a favorite shirt blow out on them and found a way to reinforce those seams before it happens?

Sewing exists for a reason, four inches isn't that dramatic.

@carr.luna says sewing exists but I think she's downplaying how awkward that walk to the register is lol. I caught a sewing blog saying to use a flat felled seam on linen shirts since it spreads the stress better than a standard side seam. Learned the hard way that those tight factory seams are basically designed to pop.

No way, four inches? That's a massive blowout just from reaching for a book. I'd be mortified trying to check out holding my arm like that. Did you at least get a good deal on the book to make up for the embarrassment?
