I finally figured out why so many custom jeans look stiff and weird

Honestly, I keep seeing designers at the local market here in Austin use way too heavy a denim for fitted styles. They pick a 14oz fabric for a skinny jean pattern and it just can't drape right. I learned this after making three pairs for a friend that all sat in her closet. Tbh, the right weight for the cut matters way more than a fancy stitch. Has anyone else found a good mid-weight denim source for women's trousers?

Yes, the right weight for the cut is everything. I made a pair of high-waisted jeans from a stiff 12oz denim and they stood up on their own, it was so bad. Have you tried looking at denim from a deadstock supplier? I found a great 10oz Japanese selvedge that finally drapes like it should.

Used to think heavier denim was always better for structure. That 12oz disaster you mentioned changed my mind fast. Now I hunt for lighter deadstock too, that 10oz Japanese stuff sounds perfect.

Remember my "sturdy" 14oz jeans that could stop a bullet? They were so stiff I walked like a robot for a month. Learned the hard way that weight means nothing if you can't bend your knees.
