I skipped a muslin for a bias cut dress and wasted $60 in fabric
Last week I tried drafting a bias cut slip dress straight onto the final fabric because I was sure I had the drape figured out in my head. I used 3 yards of a rayon crepe I got for $20 a yard at a shop in Austin, so $60 gone. The grain twisted on me and one side seam hung about 2 inches lower than the other, plus the whole thing stretched longer by the hour while it sat on my dress form. I had pinned it flat, cut it flat, and never once let it hang overnight, which is the exact thing every guide says to do with bias. So now I have a lopsided dress, a lot less fabric, and a new rule for myself: muslin first, always, no matter how simple the shape looks. The annoying part is I knew better and talked myself out of it because I was impatient. For anyone who cuts bias regularly, how long do you let your pieces hang before you even touch the sewing machine?
