My grandma told me to never use black thread on white fabric and I ignored her
She said it would show up weird in certain lights, but I figured it was fine for a quick hem on a dress. Three days later under the fluorescent lights at school, my whole class could see these dark lines zigzagging across the white cotton. Has anyone else had an older relative give sewing advice that sounded old fashioned but turned out to be spot on?

Oh, you've just unlocked a core memory of my grandma yelling at me about thread types, haven't you? She told me once that using cheap polyester thread on anything you actually want to last is basically asking for it to fall apart in the wash. I laughed it off and grabbed the dollar store spool. Three washes later, that plaid shirt looked like it had been through a war, with loose threads hanging off everywhere like sad little ghosts. Turns out, grandmas really do know a thing or two about what they're talking about, even if it sounds like an old wives' tale at the time.

Ain't that the truth @oliviabutler, my fleece jacket unraveled after one wash with that cheap stuff.

Ha! My buddy used bright pink thread on a white dress and learned the same lesson the hard way.
