Overheard a conversation at the fabric store about 'negative space' in patterns
I was picking up some linen in Portland last week and two people were talking about how they leave blank areas in their prints on purpose. One said, "The eye needs a place to rest." I realized my own designs are always packed with detail. I've started sketching with at least 30% of the surface area left plain, and it makes the patterns feel way more modern. Has anyone else tried designing around empty space like that?

Is it really that deep though?

Look at how people talk about decluttering like it's some kind of life changing religion. It's just moving junk from one spot to another. You see folks on TV crying over an old t-shirt they're throwing out. It's a shirt, not a memory. The whole thing feels like we're making a big deal out of basic chores.

Honestly depends on the person. My cousin got super into decluttering and it changed his whole vibe. Tbh some people just care more about that stuff.
