PSA: A tailor in Brooklyn told me to stop pinning fabric flat when I drape, and it fixed my worst fitting skirt
Back in 2019 I was trying to make a wrap skirt and the side seams kept pulling weird. My neighbor Rosa, who has been sewing for 40 years, watched me pin everything flat on the table and just shook her head. She had me pin the fabric on a dress form while it hung, letting the bias stretch, and the difference was wild. Turns out draping pins on the stand lets the fabric settle like it will on a body. Anyone else have a moment where someone older showed you a basic step you skipped?
Ngl I used to pin everything flat on the table and thought people draping on a stand were just doing too much. Then I sewed a bias cut dress and the hem went all wavy on me, so I finally tried pinning it while it hung and it was like night and day. The fabric just falls the way it should instead of fighting you. Now I keep my dress form out for anything cut on the bias, even simple stuff.
