Tokyo fabric district made me question my whole design process

I spent last Tuesday walking through Nippori Textile Town and bought 12 different swatches just to touch them. The shop owners kept telling me to feel the fabric before thinking about the pattern, and honestly that advice flipped my approach. I usually start with sketches and pick fabric last, but now I think I had it backwards the whole time. Does anyone else start with the material first, or am I the odd one out here?
