Tried making a dress from old curtains and it was a disaster

Used some heavy floral fabric from my grandma's house. Thought it would be vintage chic. The whole thing was so stiff, I couldn't even sit down in it. Felt like wearing a lampshade. Anyone have tips for working with thick, old fabrics?

Felt like wearing a lampshade" is the perfect way to put it, that made me laugh. I've totally been there with stiff fabric, it's so frustrating when a project just fights you the whole time. Willow's tip about fabric softener is a good one, I've also had luck washing thick fabric a couple times with vinegar to help break it down. Really hope your next try goes better, that vintage fabric sounds like it has potential.

My last project with stiff fabric turned me into a human umbrella frame. Vinegar is a solid trick, it really does mellow out that cardboard feeling. Grandma knew what she was talking about.

Ugh, soaking it in fabric softener saved my curtain project.

My grandma swore by vinegar for everything.
