Tried using a cheap plastic shower curtain liner as a pattern cutting base in my apartment

It's way smoother than my old vinyl one and only cost about 4 dollars at the store. Anyone have other good budget alternatives for a cutting surface?

My old cutting mat warped so I switched to a dollar store foam floor tile. It's thick enough for blades and you can pin right into it.

My friend's warped mat ruined a whole piece of fabric last week.

Try the foam tile trick. It works way better than a warped mat and costs almost nothing. You won't go back.

That foam tile trick is actually genius. My old mat did the same thing, it curled up on the edges and made straight cuts impossible. I ended up using a big piece of corrugated plastic sign board for a while, the kind they use for yard signs. It was cheap and stayed flat, but you can't pin into it like you can with foam. Might have to hit the dollar store myself.
