Unpopular opinion: a retired patternmaker in Chicago got me to throw out my croquis and just draw the seam lines first
I always started every sketch with a perfect 9-head figure, and she told me at a class back in March that the figure was making me lazy about how the garment holds together. So I tried her way on a 6-panel skirt and drew nothing but seam lines and grain for 20 minutes, and it fit right the first time instead of the usual 3 muslins. Does anyone else skip the figure completely, or am I about to be alone on this?

Watched a friend try the seam-first thing on a blazer and she nailed it in one go.
