Vent: I sketched garments flat for 9 years and my drape was always lifeless until a fit model in Chicago called me out
I used to believe you could design a whole collection on paper and the fabric would just do what you drew, like the croquis was the real work. Then 6 months ago a fit model named Dana at a studio in Chicago put on my fourth sample, looked at me and said 'this only works standing still,' and she was right. The armhole gaped the second she lifted her arms and the skirt twisted when she walked, stuff I never saw because I only drew front and back flats. So now I drape on a form first, mark the true waist and hip, and only then draw the flat from what the muslin actually did. Does anyone else draft from a dress form over flats, or am I just late to this?
