Discovered my realtor's commission was actually negotiable after I already signed

I was looking through some old closing docs from my house purchase last year and noticed the seller paid my realtor 6%. I mentioned it to a coworker and she said she got her buyer's agent down to 4% just by asking. Nobody told me you could do that before signing the buyer agency agreement. Has anyone else had luck negotiating commission rates?

Wait, didn't anyone tell you it's fair game to negotiate that stuff before signing? I used to think the standard rate was just what you paid, but after hearing stories like yours and my buddy getting his cut to 3.5%, I realized it's totally up for discussion. It's a solid lesson learned for next time for sure.

I think you're making too much of this whole commission thing. That 6% your coworker 'saved' on? She probably got a buyer's agent who did less work or cut corners. I paid full rate and my agent found me a house in a weekend, handled all the paperwork, and saved me from a bad inspection. You get what you pay for. Besides, that 2% difference on a $300k house is $6k. After taxes and whatnot, it's not that big a deal in the long run if you're happy with the house.
