Got pre-approved for $310k and then the lender called back 2 days later with bad news
Me and my wife finally got our stuff together and sat down with a lender here in Fort Worth to get pre-approved. He ran everything and handed us a letter for $310,000, so we started looking at houses right away and even toured 4 of them that weekend. Then 2 days later he calls and says he missed a $400 monthly car payment on my credit report, so our real number was actually closer to $245,000. I felt so dumb for getting my hopes up on those houses and honestly we almost made an offer on one. Has this happened to anyone else, where the lender came back with a way lower number after the first approval?

That $400 car payment magically disappearing from the first check is the same move as when a store puts the sale price on the tag but the fine print says it ended yesterday. Banks hand you the best number first because that gets you in the door, then the real math shows up two days later.
