I thought getting a home inspection was just a box to check, but ours found a $5,000 plumbing issue.

Our realtor in Austin pushed for a full inspection on the cute bungalow we were under contract for. I almost skipped it to save cash, but we went ahead. The inspector found old polybutylene pipes that were about to fail behind the kitchen wall. The seller gave us a credit for the repair, which saved us from a huge surprise bill right after moving in. Has anyone else had an inspection find something major that changed the deal?

Was your inspector not a specialist? I'd be pretty mad at them for missing something that serious.

That cracked heat exchanger story from @casey268 is scary. We had something sort of like that where the inspector said the roof was fine, but the first big storm showed a leak right over our bed. Turned out the flashing was totally wrong.

Man, that's lucky. Our inspector missed a cracked heat exchanger in our furnace, which is a huge carbon monoxide risk. We only found out because the HVAC guy laughed when he saw our inspection report. Cost us two grand to replace the whole unit.
