Just got warning letters from my HOA... three times in one month

Bought my first house in Phoenix 3 months ago. Thought an HOA would keep the neighborhood nice. Last week they hit me with a fine for having my trash can out past 6pm. Then another for my grass being 4 inches tall. I get wanting rules but this feels like they're hunting for money. Any other first timers dealing with HOA craziness?

Wow, that sounds brutal. I read somewhere that some HOAs actually hire management companies that get bonuses for the fines they collect, so they basically hunt for violations like that. Three warnings in a month seems like they're testing you to see how much you'll push back. Check your HOA handbook super carefully, because some of these rules actually aren't enforceable in Arizona, especially with the grass height thing. You might also want to go to the next board meeting and see who's really running things, sometimes the rules are way stricter than what's even legal.

My friend Sarah moved into a place in Scottsdale last year and got a warning because her welcome mat was apparently the wrong color according to their handbook. She literally had to go buy a beige one or face more fines. It's wild out there.

Did you check if Arizona has a state law limiting how much HOAs can fine you?
