That guru who told me to use buyer requests on Upwork cost me 60 hours
Some guy on YouTube kept saying spam buyer requests was the secret to getting started. I did that for 3 weeks straight, sent out maybe 80 custom proposals, and got zero replies. Turns out most buyer requests are just lowball clients or scammers fishing for free work. Has anyone else noticed those requests are mostly garbage now?

Yeah @victorhernandez is right, that advice is outdated and those requests are mostly trash now.

And I'm over here with my 120 proposals, zero replies, and a growing collection of screenshots of people asking me to install free samples 'just to see the quality.' At this point I'd have better luck putting flyers on telephone poles than scrolling through that buyer request feed. It's honestly almost impressive how consistently useless that section has become.

Yeah those buyer requests are mostly a waste of time now. Real clients rarely post there, it's all people wanting $5 logo designs or "just a quick fix" that turns into a whole project. Best move is to stop looking at them altogether. Direct proposals to job listings that are actually posted for real clients is the way to go. Spend that time instead on finding jobs that have a verified payment and some history from the client. 80 proposals with zero replies should tell you everything you need to know.
