Appreciation post: the 2 inch gap under a door frame that ate my whole Tuesday
So last Tuesday I was doing a laminate install in a house over in Beaverton, Oregon, just a basic 3 bedroom job, and everything was going smooth. I get to the last doorway, the master closet, and the gap under the jamb is about 2 inches of dead space where the subfloor drops off. I've seen some ugly transitions but this one got me. I cut my piece to fit around the jamb, tapped it in with the pull bar, and the whole corner sank down into that hole like it was quicksand. Spent an hour trying to shim it from underneath through a hole I had to cut in the crawlspace access, and the shims kept slipping sideways. Ended up pulling the whole row back out, cutting a filler strip, and gluing it down to the subfloor just to have something solid for the planks to sit on. It worked, but I hate goofy fixes like that. What do you all do when you hit a big dip under a jamb, do you build up the subfloor or just float it and hope the baseboard hides it?
