Cutting corners on underlayment will wreck your hardwood install every time

Skipped the proper pad on a rush job last month. Floorboards started squeaking in two weeks. Client called furious, had to redo the whole room. Never again. Pay for the good stuff upfront.

Yeah, I used to just grab whatever thin foam was on sale, figured it was all basically the same. Then I helped my buddy put in his floor and he sprung for the good, thick stuff. The difference in how solid it feels underfoot is night and day, no hollow sounds at all. Completely changed how I buy materials now.

Learning that lesson the hard way sounds awful, especially with a client involved. Honestly, wyattramirez is right about how a good pad changes everything underfoot. It's not just about noise, it's about the whole floor feeling solid and lasting longer. Cutting corners always comes back to bite you, and now you know for sure. That upfront cost saves so much hassle and money later. Tbh, it really makes you stick to the right materials every time.

Learned that lesson with my own living room floor. Went with the bargain roll from the big box store because the price was so tempting. Within a month, it sounded like walking on a bag of chips and felt totally cheap. Ripped it all out, used a proper cork underlayment, and the difference was insane. The floor finally felt quiet and solid, like it was actually part of the house. That cheap stuff is just a trap.

My buddy Pete tried to save money on his fixer-upper reno. He got that super cheap, flimsy foam underlayment for the whole living room. The day they finished, you could feel every single seam and hear a weird crunch with every step. They had to pull up all the new planks and do it over with the right pad. He said the waste of time and extra material cost hurt way more than just buying good stuff first.
