My mentor told me to always use a 1/8 inch trowel for sheet vinyl and I ignored him for 2 years

An old timer named Frank who ran a shop out of his garage told me that thin spreads keep the seams flat and stop bubbles. I kept using bigger notches and had to redo three kitchens in Columbus before I finally listened. Has anyone else had a cheap stubborn lesson like that that cost them real money?

Three kitchens man ouch that one hurts. I spent $400 on a fancy self leveler that I was too proud to actually use right and ended up having to rip out a whole bathroom floor because I thought I knew better than the directions. Still have the bucket sitting in my garage as a reminder that my stubbornness costs me time and lunch money.

That line about keeping the bucket as a reminder hits close to home. I've got a beat up trowel in my truck that I refuse to throw away because it reminds me of the time I tried mixing thin set by eye instead of following the bag. Ended up with a shower floor that looked like the surface of the moon and had to chip it all out with a hammer and chisel over two weekends. Sometimes the lessons we pay for with our backs hurt the most, but at least we don't forget them.

That self leveler bucket in the garage is a $400 monument to ignoring the instructions, just like my old trowel.
