PSA: A guy in Buffalo changed my mind about glue-down on concrete
I used to avoid glue-down on concrete slabs no matter what, always pushed floating floors instead. Then 8 months ago I watched an installer named Ray prep a 1,200 sq ft slab in Buffalo by grinding it and checking moisture with a calcium chloride test before he touched a single plank. He said "the slab tells you what it wants, you just gotta listen to it" and showed me how his glue-down job from 2019 still had zero popping or lifting. Now I'm rethinking my whole approach, has anyone else switched after seeing someone else do it right?
Watched a guy out in Cheektowaga do the same thing with a slab that had a hairline crack running through it. Instead of floating over it he ground the whole thing down, filled the crack with epoxy, and did a calcium chloride test twice to be sure. That floor is 4 years old now and still flat as a pancake with no hollow spots anywhere. What sold me was seeing him take moisture readings and actually wait a few extra weeks when the numbers were high instead of just slapping down a vapor barrier and hoping for the best. Doing it right costs more upfront and takes longer, but come back in 5 years and the glue-down is still perfect while the floating floor has gaps and bounce. I still float in some spots but on a slab that tests dry, glue-down wins every time.
