Spent $300 on a laser level system in 2018 and it still pays for itself every time I do a big tile layout.
That was the best money I ever spent on a tool, but my buddy just dropped $150 on a cheap one from Amazon and the line drifts after 10 minutes, has anyone else had that happen with those budget units?

Yeah, I've run into that exact problem with a cheaper laser a few years back. Turned out the unit was just poorly calibrated from the factory and no amount of tweaking would keep it steady. Sent it back and got a replacement that's been fine for shorter sessions, so it might be worth your buddy trying to exchange it.

Oh man, I actually think your buddy might have gotten a dud rather than that being normal. I've used a couple of those cheaper Amazon lasers for small jobs and the line held steady for at least an hour or two. Your mileage may vary, but a line drifting after 10 minutes sounds more like a defective unit or maybe the battery was dying.
