Vent: Uneven subfloor ate 3 full days on a 900 sq ft job in Columbus
Started a vinyl plank install last week and the laser showed almost a half inch dip in the middle of the living area. I figured a quick self leveler pour would fix it in a few hours. Wrong. That stuff ended up bubbling in one spot, then I had to grind it down and do a SECOND pour over the whole 900 square feet. What should have been a two day job turned into nearly five, and I ate the cost of extra leveler out of my own pocket. Does anyone else carry a long straightedge on every job now, or am I the only one who learned this lesson the hard way?

A long straightedge is good but it only tells you part of the story. What really gets you is not knowing how deep the dip goes and how far it spreads till you start pouring. Next time I'd skip the self leveler on a big open area like that and look at something like a patching compound over the low spot first, or even just float it with a skim coat before you ever think about pouring. The bubbling usually means the floor under it wasn't sealed or primed right, so that half inch dip plus a bad bond is what turned your two day job into five. Grinding and re-pouring is brutal though, you basically paid tuition on that one.
