Wasted a full day on a glue-down job because I didn't check the slab moisture first.

The adhesive never cured right, and the whole floor had to be ripped up. That was a $1,200 lesson in materials and labor. Anyone have a good, cheap meter they trust?

You didn't even do a simple plastic sheet test first?

Honestly, I get why you'd say that, but a plastic sheet test isn't always the final word. In my old place, I did the test and it was fine, but we still got a huge damp spot on the ceiling a year later. Turns out the problem was in a wall the test couldn't even reach. Sometimes the simple check just gives you a false sense of security.

Yeah, that false sense of security thing is real. My buddy had a clean plastic sheet test too, then his whole basement wall started weeping after a heavy spring. The leak was way off to the side where he never thought to check.

Simple plastic sheet test" makes me think of my uncle's old greenhouse. He never checked for leaks either, fiona749, and the whole thing just pooled water until it collapsed one winter. Some people just learn the hard way.
