A data sheet from the sand supplier just made me look like a genius after a week of bad pours

We had this one mold that kept coming out with these nasty burn marks, right along the top edge. Swapped the sand, checked the moisture, even tried a different coating. Then I got to reading the supplier's technical sheet that came in the box, the one nobody ever opens. Turns out the permeability rating on our mix was way off for that part's geometry, it was choking the gas out. We adjusted the green sand ratio by about 4% and the next pour came out clean as anything. I was honestly surprised the numbers mattered that much, I always figured it was more about the operator. Now I'm wondering how many of these little specs I've been ignoring for the past 15 years. Has anyone else had a similar thing where a random data sheet saved your day after you'd already blamed the crew?

Yeah the real lesson here is that physics has been laughing at us the whole time. We spent three days yelling at the new guy about his technique and it was just a dang number on a piece of paper. Now I'm gonna be that guy who reads every spec sheet like it's a treasure map. My safety guy is gonna love me, or hate me, not sure which yet. But hey, at least the mold didn't need a funeral.
