Had a core shift on a big gear blank pour at the old Tacoma plant
We were pouring a 500 pound gear blank and I saw the sand core start to float up right in the middle of the fill. My foreman yelled 'hold it!' and I jammed a heavy steel rod down the riser to pin it in place until the metal set. It worked, but we had to grind off a big lump of extra metal from the bore. Anyone ever have a better fix for a floating core on a vertical job?

Just let it float and scrap the part.

What if letting it float is the smarter move sometimes? You scrap one part but you save all the time and risk of trying a crazy fix that might not even work. Grinding off that lump sounds like a ton of extra work for a part that might still have hidden flaws.
