Old timer's advice on green sand moisture almost wrecked my pour
I had a guy who's been doing this since the 70s tell me to trust the feel test for moisture content. He swore the squeeze test was all you needed, no meter. So last week I skipped checking the sand with our digital gauge, went off his method, and my molds started steaming and spitting gas like crazy. The first two castings came out full of pinholes and I had to scrap them, probably lost $150 in iron and time. Turns out his old rule was for a different clay blend, our sand has a higher bentonite load and holds water differently. I'm back to using the meter every single batch now, but I'm curious if anyone else has gotten burned by following veteran tricks that just don't translate to modern materials. Is it really just the moisture though, or is it the whole way those guys WERE taught to think about sand? I mean, that old feel test was probably PERFECT for the local pit sand and straight bentonite they had in the 70s, but modern blends are so fine and processed. The squeeze test tells you about balling, not about the actual free water sitting on those tiny particles. You got a higher clay load, so the sand LOOKS dry when it's actually still soaked deep inside. That's the sneaky part, your hand feels the surface crust, but the guts of the mold are still full of vapor. I bet their old clay was chunkier too, so the water escaped faster, no wonder their shortcut backfired on you.

And I remember reading something years back about how the old timers adjusted their sand recipes by feel because their clay was way more forgiving than the modern stuff, so half the time they were running dryer than they thought. Makes sense that a squeeze test is garbage when your bentonite is holding onto water like a sponge on steroids. Honestly, your meter is the only friend you can trust with this stuff, especially once you switch up any part of the blend.
