Our furnace lining went from lasting 6 weeks to over 4 months after we switched suppliers

We used to get our refractory bricks from the local place in Gary. They'd crack and crumble after maybe 40 heats, tops. About a year ago, the foreman switched us to a brand called 'Therma-Shield' from a supplier in Ohio. The difference is night and day. We're pushing 150 heats on the same lining now with minimal wear. Anyone else have a go-to brick brand that actually holds up?

Wow, that's a huge jump in performance! Makes you wonder what the old supplier was even selling.

You ever get the feeling they were just selling us fancy sand? My old gym's gear felt like that sometimes lol

Were you guys doing any kind of routine inspection or testing on the old bricks before they failed, or just running them until they cracked? I'm curious if the impurities were something you could spot early or if they just gave out without warning. Knowing that might help figure out if it was a bad batch or a systematic issue with the supplier.

Heard the cheap stuff sometimes has way more impurities. Was your old supplier maybe cutting corners on the silica content?
