PSA: I think we rely too much on pre-mixed core washes for our green sand molds.
Last Tuesday at the plant in Toledo, a new wash batch caused a massive gas defect in a 200-pound gear housing pour, so I went back to mixing my own from dry ingredients and haven't had a single blowhole since, but does anyone else still make their own from scratch?

Our shop in Dayton switched back to dry mix about five years ago after a similar mess. The pre-mixed stuff is just too wet sometimes, you can't control the carrier. It takes an extra twenty minutes but it's worth it for a clean pour. We use a basic alcohol base and zircon flour, nothing fancy.

Too wet sometimes" is putting it nicely. I once had a batch so wet it looked like I was pouring a smoothie. My shop floor did NOT thank me.

Is one bad batch really enough to ditch the pre-mixed stuff for good? Seems like a big hassle to mix your own every time. Couldn't that Toledo batch just have been a bad mix from that supplier?
