Talked to a 35-year veteran about why my flasks kept warping

He told me I was ramming my sand too hard on the pattern side, said I needed to ease up about 15%. Tried it on my next pour and the casting came out cleaner than anything I've done in 8 months - has anyone else been over-compacting their green sand without realizing it?

i mean, i get what you're saying but maybe it's just me being skeptical here. are you sure it's that simple? i've messed with sand compaction for years and sometimes it feels like people just look for one magic fix and call it a day. like, i had a buddy who swore he fixed his warping by switching to a different brand of sand, but then next month he was back to square one because his moisture content was off. idk, ramming technique probably matters but could be a bunch of other stuff too like your binder ratio or particle shape. maybe try the same pour with your old technique but different sand first before you commit to backing off 15% forever.

I had a similar thing happen with my gardening soil last spring - kept compacting it too much around seedlings and wondering why they weren't growing right. My neighbor told me to just pat it lightly instead of pressing down hard, and everything started thriving. Funny how sometimes the fix is just backing off a little on the pressure you're applying.

Yeah, I hear you Max. It’s hard to tell if it’s really just one thing or a whole chain of little tweaks you gotta get right.
