The old furnace tender said my mold sand was too wet, he was spot on

First week on the floor, old Hank comes over and grabs a handful of my sand. Says it feels like a damp sponge. I shrugged it off, figured he was just old and grumpy. Next three pours I got scabbing on every single casting. Finally asked him what he checks. He showed me the squeeze test, clench your fist and if water weeps out between your fingers its too wet. I started aiming for just barely holding its shape. Havent had a scab since. That was 4 years ago and I still think about it every time I mix a batch. Anyone else have an old timer give you advice that sounds dumb until it saves your whole shift?
