Three summers of pouring in Phoenix taught me to check the sand temp before anything else
Back in 2019 I was running the afternoon shift at a small shop near the airport. We had a rush order for manhole covers and I figured the sand was fine because it felt okay on my gloves. First three molds came out spongy, looked like a cheese grater on the bottom. Foreman walks over, touches the sand with his bare hand, and says 'that's 140 degrees, you just wasted 80 bucks of iron.' Now I keep a cheap infrared thermometer on a lanyard and check every bucket before I ram it. Has anyone else had green sand act up when the ambient temp pushes past 105?
