Tried using a ceramic fiber blanket for a riser sleeve instead of our usual sand mix

The blanket just didn't hold up under the heat like the sand does, and we ended up with a scrapped 200 lb casting. Anyone else tried this and had a different result?

Sometimes the old way is the only way that works...

But what if the old way is just the one we're used to? New problems need new answers, not just the same old fix. Sticking with what's familiar can stop us from finding something that works even better. It feels safe, sure, but safe isn't always right.

yeah i get what you're saying about not just sticking with the old way cause it's comfortable, but sometimes you gotta trust your gut on what actually works. we had this issue last year with our foundry setup where we tried switching to some modular system to speed things up cause everyone said it was the future. total disaster, we lost way more time and material than if we'd just stuck with our regular sand setup that we knew inside out. eventually we went back to it and just tweaked a few small things, like changing the kind of binder we use and the moisture level, and that simple adjustment solved the problem without throwing everything out. new ideas are great and all, but not every new problem needs a brand new answer.

Ever try using those insulating fire bricks for a backup? We got talked into it once and had the same mess, lost a whole pallet of smaller castings before lunch. The theory sounds good but the practice is a total fail, some things just need the mass and stability of sand. It feels like chasing a cheap fix for a problem that doesn't exist.
