Hourly invoice vs flat rate, lost $300 on a repeat job

Did a site survey for a fence company in Phoenix. Quoted flat rate like all my other bids. Job went smooth, 2 days. Then I realized my hourly cost would've been $300 more. My old contracts all used hourly. I switched to flat rate because clients liked it. But they love the fixed price and I eat the overrun. Now I'm building a hybrid: hourly plus a capped maximum. Has anyone else done that without scaring off the customer?

Heard a contractor say capped hourly works, customers like knowing the top number. Worth a shot.
