I used to think a handshake deal was fine for a $2000 illustration job

Last year, a client in Austin ghosted me after I sent the final files. I had nothing in writing, just a few emails. Now I make a simple one page agreement before starting any project, even small ones. It lists the payment, the number of revisions, and who owns the work. Has anyone else switched to a basic contract after getting burned?

My Austin client ghosted me on a three thousand dollar logo job. A basic contract actually builds trust with good clients because it sets clear rules for everyone.

Contracts just kill the vibe and make clients run.

Actually had the same worry when I started out. Framing it as a simple "work agreement" that protects both of us changed everything. It just lists what I'll do, when they pay, and keeps things clear. Good clients see it as professional, not personal. The only ones who run are the ones you probably didn't want to work with anyway.
