Lost $200 on a retainer clause I didn't read carefully

Signed a contract with a marketing agency back in March that had a 90-day retainer minimum. I figured I'd need it but their work was garbage by week 4. Tried to cancel and they pointed to the clause that locked me in for the full three months. Lost $200 on work I didn't even use and now I read every word before I sign. Has anyone else gotten burned by hidden retainer terms?

Opened up a gym membership one time without reading the fine print and locked myself into a 12 month contract with a place that was 45 minutes away. Paid for 8 months I never used because I was too embarrassed to admit I signed a dumb deal. Your $200 hurts but at least it wasn't a whole year of guilt payments. We've all been the person who learns the hard way that "I'll read it later" means never.

Read that most states let you cancel these within 3 days for a refund.

Oh man, that's the worst feeling. But seriously, did you actually try calling them and asking for a refund? Like, did you speak to a real person or just email? I've heard some companies will push back hard but if you're polite and persistent they sometimes cave. I mean, it's worth a shot even if it's been a few days. What exactly did they say when you asked?
