The payment link that showed me my contract was worthless

I used to copy paste the same contract for every client for like 4 years. Never tweaked anything. Then a client in Portland asked if they could pay via a link instead of my bank transfer clause. I said sure, no problem. Two weeks later they bounced, and my lawyer looked at the contract and said 'this thing is basically a napkin with a date on it.' Realized I had zero protection for payment methods, late fees, or scope changes. That one conversation cost me $1,800 to fix. Has anyone else had that moment where a lawyer or client made you see your own contract was garbage?

Buddy of mine ran a landscaping biz and thought his one page quote form was bulletproof. Client added a bunch of extra work mid project, he did it, then they refused to pay for anything beyond the original number. His lawyer showed him the form had no line about change orders, so he ate two grand in labor and supplies.
