Bought a $200 Shopify theme that crashed my store during a sale

Back in 2019 I thought I was being smart picking a fancy theme for a client's holiday launch. Paid $200 for it on a Friday, uploaded it Saturday, and their store froze up Sunday right when traffic hit 500 people. The refund process took two weeks and I lost that client's next three months of work. Anyone else get burned by a theme that looked great but couldn't handle real traffic?

Jump right into the refund issue because that's a whole other headache on top of the crash itself. Most theme developers hide behind "you modified it" or "it's your host's fault" to avoid giving your money back, even when the code is clearly buggy. I've found that buying themes from places with a strict 14-day no-questions-asked policy (like ThemeForest's official guarantee) saves a ton of stress, though even that can be a fight if the seller fights you on it.

Oh, careful with that - ThemeForest's guarantee isn't actually no-questions-asked, they just have a pretty fair refund policy if the item is broken or not as described. Have you had to fight a seller on there before?

@jamesc79, actually ThemeForest's guarantee isn't quite that strict.
