I finally had a Shopify store crash during a flash sale last month

I run a small freelance gig helping local shops with their online stores. Last month one of my clients in Portland ran a 40% off flash sale and the site went down at 200 active users. I ended up scrambling for 2 hours to move them to a higher tier hosting plan mid-sale. Was that the right call or should I have had a backup host ready to go from the start? Has anyone else dealt with a site crash during a traffic spike and what saved you?

200 active users isn't that many, sounds like a cheap shared hosting problem.

Ha @linda_butler, maybe the bottleneck is their caching config not the host.
