My payment gateway went down right at checkout peak on Cyber Monday in Austin

I lost about $1,800 in orders over 4 hours because I never set up a backup processor, and the client was furious until I showed them the raw failed-transaction log, so has anyone else survived a gateway outage without a secondary option?

Keep a second terminal or a paper order form handy next time, it's saved me twice when Stripe hiccuped during holiday rushes. Better to lose a few minutes handwriting orders than four hours of sales.

We got burned once doing a pop-up market with only Square and the wifi died. Now we keep a little clipboard with a carbon copy pad tucked under the counter. Takes 30 seconds to write it out, then I just punch it into the system later when things calm down. It feels old school, but it beats staring at a frozen screen while a line of people wait.
