Bet that $12 surge protector just saved you a lot more than $500 though. Static zap from carpet or a power flicker could've fried that laptop before you even plugged it in.

Honestly, @wells.evan is probably right, and now I'm just picturing my laptop getting zapped by a static sock before I even opened the box. Guess I'll call it a $500 life lesson with a $12 side of paranoia.

My old desktop died last year from a power surge during a storm. Had it plugged straight into the wall like a dummy. Cost me $400 to replace the motherboard and I was out of commission for a week. That $12 protector would've been a steal compared to that headache lol.
